The short answer
Most problems with Sub-Zero, Viking and Thermador refrigerators can be traced to a specific failed part, such as a fan, defrost component, sensor, valve or door seal, and repairing it is usually more practical than replacing a unit built into custom cabinetry. We diagnose the cause on site and explain the repair and its cost before any work begins.
A built-in refrigerator that stops holding temperature puts your food at risk, and because it sits inside custom cabinetry, it is not something you can easily swap out over a weekend. Sub-Zero Repair Specialists repairs high-end refrigeration for homeowners in Carson and nearby cities, including Torrance, Long Beach, Gardena, Lakewood and Wilmington. We focus first on Sub-Zero built-ins, columns and undercounter units, and we also repair Viking and Thermador refrigerators. We service the Wolf cooking appliances that often share the same kitchen. We are an independent repair company and are not affiliated with any manufacturer. Below is what we look for, how we decide what is worth fixing, and what to expect when we come out.
Issues we fix
Refrigeration problems usually start small. A section runs a few degrees warm, or a little frost appears where it never did before. Catching these early often keeps a minor repair from turning into a sealed-system job. These are the symptoms homeowners most often call us about:
- Fresh food section running warm while the freezer seems fine, or the reverse
- Not cooling at all, or the compressor running nonstop
- Frost or ice building up on the back wall, evaporator cover or around the door opening
- Water pooling under the crisper drawers or on the floor, often from a blocked defrost drain
- Ice maker not making ice, making small or hollow cubes, or leaking
- Water dispenser slow, dripping or not working
- Error codes, flashing service indicators or temperature alarms
- Doors that don't seal or close fully, torn gaskets or sagging hinges
- Clicking, buzzing or rattling from the top grille, or loud fan noise
- Condensation forming on the exterior or between doors and panels

What our technician checks on a built-in unit
Built-in and column refrigerators are designed differently from freestanding models, so we follow a set process instead of guessing. We start by measuring the actual temperature in each zone with our own thermometer, because the display alone does not always tell the full story.
On many built-ins, the condenser coil and fan sit at the top behind the grille. We inspect and clean that area, since dust and kitchen grease restrict airflow and make the system work harder. That strain shows up most during hot spells. Inland parts of the Los Angeles area run much hotter in summer than the coast, and fall Santa Ana winds can bring dry heat even closer to the ocean.
From there we check the evaporator fans, defrost heater, defrost sensor and drain. We read any stored codes or diagnostic modes on the control board and test the temperature sensors. We also measure the compressor and its start components and look for signs of a refrigerant leak before recommending any sealed-system work. Finally, we inspect door gaskets, hinges, closers and leveling. A heavy custom panel that is slightly out of level can keep a door from sealing. If the unit has ice or water features, we check the water valve, filter and supply line too.
How Sub-Zero, Viking, Wolf and Thermador differ
Each brand has its own design choices, and those choices shape what tends to wear out. The patterns below are common tendencies. They don't predict what will happen with any specific unit.
Many Sub-Zero refrigerators use separate cooling for the fresh food and freezer sections. That design helps preserve food, but it also means one side can fail while the other keeps working normally. Top-mounted condensers that need regular cleaning, evaporator fan motors, defrost components and ice makers are frequent service points. Older units may also need sealed-system attention.
Viking built-in refrigerators often come in for door hinge and closer wear, especially behind heavy custom panels. Ice makers, fans and control boards are other common repairs.
Thermador column refrigerators are installed as separate units side by side, each with its own system, so a problem is usually limited to one column. Electronic controls, temperature sensors and freezer-column ice makers are typical areas we look at.
Wolf makes ranges, ovens and cooktops rather than refrigerators. Because Wolf is so often paired with Sub-Zero in the same kitchen, we handle those cooking appliances as well.

Repair or replace a high-end refrigerator?
For premium built-ins, repair usually makes sense. These units are built for long service, and many of their parts can be replaced individually. Replacement also involves more than buying a new refrigerator, since the new model has to fit your existing opening, panels and trim.
Replacement becomes worth discussing when the cabinet or liner is cracked, when the sealed system has failed on an older unit, when the parts you need are no longer available, or when several major components are failing at once. We will give you a straight assessment based on the condition of your unit, and the decision stays with you.
What affects the cost of a refrigerator repair
We quote after diagnosis, because the price depends on what is actually wrong. The main factors are:
- The fault itself: a fan motor or gasket is a much smaller job than a compressor or refrigerant leak repair
- Parts: genuine replacement components, how available they are, and whether they have to be ordered
- Access: units set in custom cabinetry may need trim or panels removed, or the unit pulled from its opening
- Sealed-system work, which takes more time and specialized equipment
- Return trips, if a part has to be ordered and installed on a second visit
How a visit works
When you book, tell us the brand, the model and serial number if you can find them (usually on a label inside the fresh food section or behind the top grille), and what you are noticing. Write down any error codes before you call.
Our technician arrives within your scheduled window, protects your floors and cabinetry, and runs through the diagnostic steps above. We explain what we found and give you the repair cost before starting any work. If the part is on hand, we can often finish the repair the same visit. If not, we order it and schedule a return trip. Before we leave, we confirm the unit is cooling and cycling properly.
