The short answer
Most dishwasher problems in high-end kitchens come from a short list of parts: drain and circulation pumps, heaters, door latches, inlet valves, seals and control boards. A built-in premium dishwasher is usually worth repairing unless the tub is cracked or rusted or key parts are no longer available. We diagnose the fault first and explain your options before any work begins.
A dishwasher that stops draining or leaves dishes gritty is a daily problem, especially when it is built into custom cabinetry and paired with premium cooking and refrigeration. Sub-Zero Repair Specialists repairs dishwashers in Carson and nearby cities, including Torrance, Gardena, Long Beach and Compton. We work in kitchens built around Sub-Zero, Viking, Wolf and Thermador equipment. Some of these brands make dishwashers and some don't. Sub-Zero's dishwashers are sold under the Cove name, and Wolf kitchens usually pair Wolf cooking with a Cove or other panel-ready dishwasher. Thermador and Viking each make their own. We are an independent repair company, not affiliated with any of these manufacturers. Our job is to find the actual fault, explain it plainly and fix it without damaging your cabinetry or countertops.
Issues we fix
These are the symptoms homeowners describe most often. Several of them can share one cause, so we test before we replace anything.
- Water left standing in the bottom of the tub after a cycle
- Dishes coming out dirty, gritty or with a cloudy film
- Dishes not drying, or the cycle running far longer than normal
- Leaks onto the floor, or a leak-protection shutoff that stops the machine
- Error codes, blinking lights or a control panel that won't respond
- The unit won't start, or stops partway through a cycle
- Door that won't latch, drops open hard or won't stay closed
- Grinding, humming or rattling during wash or drain
- Detergent left in the dispenser at the end of the cycle
- Persistent odors from trapped food and standing water

What our technician checks on a built-in unit
A panel-ready dishwasher hides almost everything behind a cabinet-matched door. Diagnosis starts with what can be checked in place: the filter assembly and sump, spray arms and their bearings, the door gasket and the latch. We also check the error history if the control stores one.
From there we test the electrical side. That means the drain pump, the circulation pump, the heating element or flow-through heater, the water inlet valve, the float and its switch, temperature sensors and the control board. We check the drain path for kinks, a clogged air gap or a blocked disposer connection, because a drain problem often starts outside the dishwasher.
If the unit has to come out, we release the mounting brackets carefully. These are often screwed into stone countertop or side cabinets. We also protect the floor and the neighboring panels. Custom door panels add weight, so we check that the door springs are set for that weight. Mis-set springs are a common cause of doors that slam open or won't close.
How the brands differ in what tends to fail
Thermador dishwashers have a sealed base pan with a float. When water collects there from a leaking hose, pump seal or valve, the float trips a leak-protection shutoff and the machine stops. That shutdown is a symptom, so we trace where the water came from rather than just drying the pan. Combined pump-and-heater assemblies and drain pumps are other frequent repairs on these units.
Viking dishwashers in the field range widely in age. Common repairs include door latches and switches, inlet valves, pumps and control boards. On older models, the bigger question is often whether parts can still be sourced and how long they take to arrive.
Cove dishwashers from the Sub-Zero family use controls built into the top edge of the door. Latch, door-switch and control-wiring faults can look like a dead machine. Owners of Sub-Zero refrigeration and Wolf cooking equipment often have a Cove or a similar fully integrated dishwasher. Across all of them, clogged filters and mineral scale from tap water are the most common causes of poor cleaning and drying.

Repair or replace a high-end dishwasher?
In most cases, repair makes sense. Premium dishwashers are built to be serviced, and pumps, valves, latches, heaters and boards are replaceable parts. Replacing the whole unit also means matching the cutout, refitting or remaking a custom panel and possibly disturbing the countertop. That adds cost and disruption beyond the machine itself.
Replacement is worth considering in a few situations: the inner tub is cracked or rusted through, the unit has repeated board failures, needed parts are discontinued, or the total repair cost is close to the cost of a new machine. We tell you which of these applies, if any, so you can decide with clear information.
What affects the cost of a repair
Cost depends mainly on three things. The first is the fault itself: a clogged filter or drain line is very different from a failed control board. The second is the parts involved, including whether they are in stock or have to be ordered. The third is access. A dishwasher that must be pulled from under stone countertop, with a heavy custom panel and tight plumbing, takes more labor than one that can be serviced from the front.
We explain what we found and what the repair involves before any work begins, so nothing is done without your approval.
How a visit works
When you contact us, tell us the brand, the model number if you can find it, and what the dishwasher is doing. The model and serial label is usually on the edge of the door or the tub rim. Note any error code or light pattern you see.
Our technician arrives, confirms the symptom, runs diagnostics and explains the cause and your options. If the part is on hand, we can often complete the repair the same visit. If it has to be ordered, we schedule a return visit to install it. Either way, we finish by running a cycle to confirm the dishwasher fills, washes, heats and drains properly.
